MLIS ePortfolio

Artifacts

Here are some samples of the work I did throughout my MLIS degree (listed in chronological order).

Intellectual Freedom & Censorship

LIS 7010 Introduction to Library & Information Science

This Issue Panel assignment included an individual paper and group presentation on an issue important to the library and information science field. My group, which included Eve Johnson, Liz Bastyr, Libby Wambheim, and myself, did our panel on intellectual freedom and censorship. I focused my research on intellectual freedom and the U.S. Patriot Act, comparing the law’s effects to the idea of Panopticism and how libraries and information professionals address the issue. Subject Heading Cross-References: Global Warming

LIS 7030 Organization of Knowledge

This project looks at inconsistencies and missing references in Library of Congress Subject Headings related to global warming. I listed, drew, and modeled the existing cross-references between headings, and then did the same thing for how I thought they could be improved. Mental Health Resources for the Homeless or Those With Critical Housing (SQL Database)

LIS 7510 Database Management

This is a database I worked with Liz Bastyr to design and build using SQL. It contains information about local resources for people experiencing homelessness and/or mental health challenges. The paper includes the purpose and organization of the database. Go to Mental Health Resources for the Homeless or Those With Critical Housing (SQL Database) assignment

Introverts as Leaders: It Can be Done…Successfully

LIS 7700 Management of Libraries & Information Centers

This assignment asked us to choose an important management topic and write a paper and do a presentation describing the issue and talking about different perspectives. I chose the topic of introverts as leaders because, as an introvert myself, I feel workplaces would benefit from having a wider variety of personality types in management positions. Budget Resources for the Budget Novice

LIS 7040 Information Access Services

The online subject guide is one or more webpages designed to help direct library patrons to important and reliable information about a specific topic. I chose to make my online subject guide, built on the LibGuides platform, about personal finance and budgeting, with Dakota County Public Library patrons in mind. I searched the Dakota County Library catalog and the internet for books, articles, and websites that provided a variety of relevant information and helpful tools. Self-Disclosure on Facebook: Why we Share & How to Protect Yourself

LIS 7690 Information Technology, People & Society

This analytical literature review discusses why people share personal information on Facebook, the benefits and risks of doing so, and important considerations in terms of privacy. This assignment asked us to write and present about a topic related to the social aspects of information technology. Go to Self-Disclosure on Facebook: Why we Share & How to Protect Yourself assignment

Mental Health Resources for the Homeless or Those With Critical Housing (PHP Scripting)

LIS 7963 Topics: Advanced Databases

This project uses PHP and limited amounts of HTML and CSS to build upon the database project from LIS 7510 Database Management. Liz and I had envisioned that our database would be accessible on a website, so I thought it would be fun to continue the project. The focus of this project was creating a way to search a database and making a form that allowed users to enter information into the database. Intellectual Freedom Opinions and Political Leanings - Data Analysis

LIS 7050 Research Methods for Library Information Science

This questionnaire assignment asked us to develop survey questions, collect data, analyze data, and interpret our findings. I worked with Diane Lochner to create a short questionnaire about intellectual freedom opinions and political leanings. A Wrap-Up of my Semester of Data Visualization

LIS 8010 Special Studies: Data Visualization: Exploration of the Art & Science of Communicating Abstract Data

This is the final product of my independent study on data visualization. Throughout the semester, I learned the basic concepts of data visualization and used real data to practice these techniques. I used Microsoft Excel and Tableau to prepare, explore, and analyze the data set. Go to A Wrap-Up of my Semester of Data Visualization assignment

Head Home

LIS 7530 Internet Fundamentals & Design

The purpose of this assignment was to plan, design, and build a website that provides information resources for a library or information center of a particular audience. The stages of this process included: a proposal, scenarios and site structure, a draft website, and the final website. For this assignment I built my website, Head Home, as an extension of my projects from LIS 7510 Database Management and LIS 7963 Advanced Databases. Go to Head Home assignment
